This was commissioned as a gift to honor a loved one for Yahrzeit. I learned, by doing this quilt, that Yahrzeit is observed in the Jewish tradition recognizing the annual anniversary of a loved ones death. I feel so grateful to be a part of this beautiful tradition and memorial for this family.
- The Hebrew phrase at the bottom is "Open Closed Open. That's all we are."
- You will notice that the circles are in an "open closed open" pattern on the quilt. This is a nod to the poem, as well as our pre-existence, life existence, and eternal existence.
- Each sun block has 18 rays (or triangles) surrounding it. 18 represents Life, or Chai in Hebrew, in the Jewish culture.
- I used the New York Beauty block as a starting point because this quilt is in honor of a true New Yorker.
- The lightning symbol carries personal significance to the recipient. The placement numerically corresponds to a scripture.
The quilting is a mix of free motion, ruler work, and some computer run sections.
This idea started with a map from the late 1800s of the piers near Christopher Street in New York. A little cropping and straightening, a lot of editing, way too much math😄, and the map became a quilt pattern!
The quilting incorporates slanted lines and stitches to create movement and texture to the water. The softer quilting on the roads and buildings differentiates it from the water and gives extra loftiness to those areas.
I added a little hand embroidery detail for the street name. Now this quilt is happily at its home on Christopher Street.
I feel honored to have worked on this project for @peterlaneclay and I'm so excited to share this with everyone! I went to NYC to be at the install of this incredible textile that has been in the works for almost two years. The textile covers an entire wall of this room. It is so beautiful in this space with the natural light from the windows reflecting off the sheen of the fabric. It will soon become an artistic background to a cozy bed.
Thank you @peterlaneclay for trusting me to take your sketch and sew it into reality, I'm humbled to work with an artist such as yourself. 🙏
Thank you @neal_thomas for connecting all of us and seeing the vision.
Thank you to @erikbrucestudio for your detailed work and creativity. For creating the mounting hardware and executing the installation.
Credit to Sermin Kardestuncer for her hand sewing on the black tassels.
It has been such a pleasure working with you all! I'm so proud of this piece!
This was the culmination of 15 months of work so it was a very special occasion. Kimmy and I first met in 2021. Kimmy and I worked together to design a set of custom quilts for her twin boys utilizing their baby swaddle blankets and onsies. It has been such a joy to create these heirlooms for this adorable family!
After all the welcome hugs at the brunch, the hubs and I hung the quilt. I took a moment to explain the meaning and the composition of the quilts. Kimmy shared all the sentimental details of the swaddle blankets and onesie. Then we enjoyed our spacey brunch together 💫. And, of course, I spent the rest of the time playing with the boys!
The quilts are seperate and individual, but when put together they ceate a full cosmis design. The quilting was done in a cross hatch pattern with a domestic machine and hand embroidered.
Thank you for such a memorial event and project @kimmyscotti !!

This surprise quilt was so much fun because I got to deliver it to the birthday girl - @hkrichardsonart ! She was expecting a UPS driver - imagine her surprise when she opened the door to me!
Her husband contacted me to make this special gift. He knew her favorite quilt block was a log cabin, told me her favorite colors and was able to keep it a secret - what a keeper right?!
The fabric highlights the October birth flower, the Cosmos. The Cosmos symbolizes harmony, peace, and love. All beautiful attributes I think @hkrichardsonart displays in her art. If you've never visited her feed, do yourself a favor and go follow her right now. The only downside is you'll want to buy everything she posts.

This is king size custom quilt in collaboration with @neal_thomas.
The quilt features free motion quilting along the outline and veins of each leaf. My personal favorite might be the back of the quilt - I love being able to see the quilting showcased.
For this piece we chose to use a faced binding with an extra wide border to line up the front and back border.
This quilt is now at it's new home in Hawaii!
